This position is responsible for providing tax compliance, tax audit, research, and planning analysis/support to the Sr Manager of Tax and Compliance; coordinating and providing technical and substantive tax law support regarding state premium tax, sales and use tax, and Fixed Assets internal book and tax compliance. This position will support audit processes; interacting extensively with taxing authorities to represent HCSC tax positions. This position will also provide tax consulting, recommendation, and exposure analysis to management on a diverse array of issues arising from transactions within HCSC departments and subsidiaries; examining current tax law trends and developments in the insurance industry for tax planning initiatives and opportunities to permanently reduce and/or defer HCSC tax liability.

Job Responsibilities: 

  • Support and defend HCSC and Subsidiaries tax positions claimed on federal and state tax returns under audit examination from taxing authorities that include:
    • Fixed Assets, tax compliance.
    • Premium Tax
    • Sales and Use Tax

  • Prepare Tax returns and Sales and Use tax returns.
  • Annually, produces fixed asset related schedules supporting the federal income tax return and applicable state income returns, for HCSC and applicable subsidiaries that own their own assets.  Prepares real estate disclosures for the NAIC Annual Statement.
  • Categorizes, inputs, and verifies acquisitions, dispositions, and changes in real estate assets, according to government guidelines and corporate policy.
  • Verifies calculation and output of automated fixed asset reporting.  Produces and verifies end-of-month Oracle closing processes to create reports and standard monthly journal entries for fixed assets.  Reconciles fixed asset accounts to the general ledger. 
  • Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and related pronouncements including Accounting Standards Codification Topic 740: Income Taxes
  • Identify potential tax saving strategy opportunities available to HCSC and to create tax saving opportunities through research and analysis. 
  • Present an accurate picture of the current tax law environment to management through routine study of current developments in tax law legislation, tax court decisions, and tax trends in the health industry to address their benefits or potential tax liability exposure to HCSC management. 

Required Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor Degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • 5 years experience dealing with tax audit processes and government exam agents or equivalent.
  • 5 years experience preparing and reviewing State and Local tax returns, including Premium tax, Sales and Use tax, and Federal and State Income tax or equivalent general tax experience.
  • Knowledge of and skills in tax research methodologies, resources, and web based tax research search engines.
  • Knowledge and skills to conduct face-to-face communications with federal and state auditors in a mature and professional manner.
  • Knowledge of Fixed Assets and Tax compliance.
  • Experience and skills in interpreting information from various sources.Experience and skill in presenting business cases to and influencing high-level third party stakeholders.
  • Verbal and written communication skills, including correct grammar, appropriate word choice, precision, conciseness, structure, appropriate tone and level of detail for audience.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with Oracle ERP and Alteryx.
